Skunks are Distinctly Known by Sight and Smell

A skunk’s most distinctive feature is its powerful, pungent smell. It releases this odor through its anal glands when it feels threatened. It only sprays when cornered or while defending its babies, but that distinct odor also acts as a warning to potential predators, as well as nearby hapless humans and unlucky animals. A skunk will not immediately spray when threatened, however. It will first shake its tail while stomping, growling, and fluffing its fur. If that does not work, it will then lift its tail and spray.
Skunks are technically members of the weasel family, and their fur is most commonly black with white stripes. They have muscular legs, especially their front legs, and their front claws are sharp, making them proficient diggers. They also have a distinctly large, bushy tail. They are commonly between a foot and a half to three feet in length, and they can weigh, on average, up to 14 pounds.
Skunks eat beetles, grubs, grasshoppers, and worms, as well as bird eggs, frogs, and small rodents such as mice. They will also eat mushrooms and berries. Their diet tends to vary, depending on the time of year, and they will scavenge for their food, even eating food scraps left by humans. They are mainly nocturnal, and while they reduce their activity during the cold winter months, they do not hibernate.

Skunks Can Cause Damage Beyond Smelling Bad

There is more to worry about than just the smell when it comes to intruding skunks, though that is a big worry. A surprised skunk will spray to defend itself, and its effects can go from a major annoyance to possible sickness for you, your family, and your pets. As burrowers, skunks will find weak spots in your crawl spaces or foundation, and these intruders will make themselves quite at home. They can damage your pipes and your electrical wiring, which creates a fire hazard. Skunks also can set up their family under your home, and the number of skunks increases the possible damage. They will also dig up your yard in search of food, leaving holes and damaging your landscaping. Skunks can even tear apart your garbage while scavenging for food. They are likely to leave their droppings under your house, garage, or office, which will significantly add to the acrid smell.
Skunks can also carry diseases, such as rabies, and they can be a health hazard to you, your family, your pets, or your employees.
